Walking, Touring Tour (Sim 50/1)

DURATION: 4 days

Day 1. Collection from Gonder Airport or hotel. Drive to the lodge via Debarak and collect tickets. Afternoon around the lodge (the scenery is spectacular at the lodge) , bird watching, gelada monkey viewing. Dinner and night at the lodge in twin bed room, see rooms page on this website. Day 2. Two possibilities all at the same price. (1) Walk from the lodge to Sankabur and then on to the Jinbur river waterfall. Overnight camp at Sankabur with all, good quality, camping equipment provided. (2) Walk/drive to Sankabur and return to the lodge the same night by car. The advantage of the first option is the possibility of seeing nocturnal hyena and jackal. The advantage of the second option is a comfortable bed!

Day 3. By car, drive to Chennuk. Climb Bwahit if you are feeling fit and descend a little into the Mesheba river valley. Alternatively walk around Chennuk, descending the escarpment and view the Walia Ibex and with luck the Simien Wolf. Return to Simien Lodge in the evening by car. Day 4. In the morning, walk to the village in the morning and take coffee with the people of the local community. See how the Simien people live. Return to Gonder in the afternoon.

THE SIMIEN MOUNTAINS

World Heritage Site

In 1978, Unesco declared the Simien Mountains a World Heritage site. This was for two reasons; the unparalleled scenery and the endemic animals. The Simiens are home to the Simien Wolf, the Walia Ibex, and the Gelada. But it is not only the fate of the endemic animals that in 1996 made Unesco decide to put this park on the list of sites in danger. Many other animals are now threatened with extinction from the area including the leopard and hyena.  The main problem is human habitation and recently plans to resettle people by economic 'push-pull' methods have been introduced to enforce a core area which is left for nature.

Ras Daschen ascent

Walking, Touring Tour (Sim 50/2)

This tour provides a practical alternative to walking all the way from Debarak or Sankabur to the top of Ras Daschen which would otherwise take about 9 days and allows those tourists keen on trekking to do other things in Ethiopia rather than block long periods for a Ras Daschen attempt.

Days 1 & 2 are the same as Tour 50/1 above. This allows for full acclimatisation.

Day 3. Drive by car to Bwahit. Arrive by 11am. At Chennuk hire mules and mule drivers, load the mules with camping equipment. Walk down into the Mersheba river valley through the village of Chiroleba, (4 hours) and ascend to the camp on the opposite side of the valley (2 hours).

Day 4. Ascent of Ras Daschen. This day will require walking between 9 and 12 hours. The cooks and mule drivers stay in the camp and you walk with your guide and scout. Leave at 4am to ensure that the peak is reached before it might be covered with cloud. Trek through pastures with giant lobelia. The final ascent demands a bit of rock climbing. Return to camp late afternoon.

Day 5. Return via Bwahit. This day is probably the hardest. The car collects you near Bwahit and you return to the lodge for the night. Evening meal at the lodge.

Day 6. Same as Day 4 for Tour Sim 50/1 above.
