Ras Daschen ascent
Walking, Touring Tour (Sim 50/2)
This tour provides a practical alternative to walking all the way from Debarak or Sankabur to the top of Ras Daschen which would otherwise take about 9 days and allows those tourists keen on trekking to do other things in Ethiopia rather than block long periods for a Ras Daschen attempt.
Days 1 & 2 are the same as Tour 50/1 above. This allows for full acclimatisation.
Day 3. Drive by car to Bwahit. Arrive by 11am. At Chennuk hire mules and mule drivers, load the mules with camping equipment. Walk down into the Mersheba river valley through the village of Chiroleba, (4 hours) and ascend to the camp on the opposite side of the valley (2 hours).
Day 4. Ascent of Ras Daschen. This day will require walking between 9 and 12 hours. The cooks and mule drivers stay in the camp and you walk with your guide and scout. Leave at 4am to ensure that the peak is reached before it might be covered with cloud. Trek through pastures with giant lobelia. The final ascent demands a bit of rock climbing. Return to camp late afternoon.
Day 5. Return via Bwahit. This day is probably the hardest. The car collects you near Bwahit and you return to the lodge for the night. Evening meal at the lodge.
Day 6. Same as Day 4 for Tour Sim 50/1 above.
